Forget T-bills and CDs. Pioneer Hi-Bred International, a subsidiary of chemical giant DuPont, guarantees the best yields around. One of the world's largest commercial seed producers, Pioneer uses genetic research to develop hybrid seeds designed to produce higher crop yields for farmers, who, in turn, sell their crops primarily as feed for animals. The company produces seed (hybrid and other varieties) for corn and soybeans, as well as alfalfa, canola, sorghum, sunflowers, and wheat. It also makes silage and hay inoculants. The company's acquisition by DuPont in 1999 allowed Pioneer to further its development efforts by tapping into DuPont's considerable research capabilities and wealth.
