Like the long muscular end of its furry namesake, Otter Tail moves across a swath of interests, from electric services and food-ingredient processing, to manufacturing goods, and health services. Its electric utility and energy activities are run as subsidiaries of Otter Tail, while subsidiary Varistar heads up most of Otter Tail's other businesses. Electric operations have been Otter Tail's core effort since its formation; the utility keeps the lights on for 129,000-plus residential, commercial, and industrial customers in Minnesota and the Dakotas. Otter Tail also dips into PVC pipes, wind towers, and diagnostic medical equipment, as well as metal stamping, trucking, construction, and potato flake processing.
