You might say this company is the prince of pepperoni in a pizza empire. The world's largest franchisee of Pizza Hut restaurants, NPC International owns and operates more than 880 pizza restaurants and delivery kitchens in about 25 states, mostly in the South. The fast-food eateries, which also serve buffalo wings, pasta, and other items, are franchised from YUM! Brands. NPC was founded by former chairman Gene Bicknell, who was one of the original Pizza Hut franchisees; he opened his first pizza restaurant in 1962. The company was acquired by investment firm Merrill Lynch in 2006.
