MGI PHARMA builds on the work of others. The drugmaker, which focuses on cancer and acute care treatments, acquires compounds discovered by others and further develops them for commercial sale. Its best-selling product is Aloxi, an injectable drug given to cancer patients to help prevent post-chemotherapy nausea and vomiting. It also sells injectable Dacogen, a treatment for myelodysplastic syndrome (a bone marrow disease); the Gliadel Wafer, which is used to treat a type of brain cancer; and Hexalen, a second-line chemotherapy for ovarian cancer. MGI PHARMA was acquired by Japan's Eisai Co. for $3.9 billion in 2008.
