Dictionary.com, LLP Company Profile
Now you don't have to run over to the bookshelf to look it up. Dictionary.com runs the free reference Web sites Dictionary.com, Thesaurus.com, and Reference.com. Combined, the three sites serve about 16 million visitors each month. Its CleverKeys is a free download that lets users access its Web databases from any application, not just the Internet. Revenue comes mainly from ad sales, but the company also offers a subscription service for premium content on its sites. The company, formerly Lexico Publishing Group, was founded in 1995 by CEO Brian Kariger and COO Daniel Fierro. In 2007 it agreed to be bought by Answers Corporation for $100 million, but the deal fell through. In 2008 Ask.com acquired the firm.
