Some companies grow from mom-and-pop operations; others just appear on the industry scene, like NewPage. Run through its subsidiary NewPage Corp., the company debuted as the largest maker of coated paper (used in corporate annual reports, magazines, and catalogs) in North America. NewPage began in 2006 when MeadWestvaco sold its papers business to investment firm Cerberus Capital. After buying Stora Enso North America's operations in 2007, NewPage ballooned to 10 paper mills capable of producing annually 4.4 million tons of coated, uncoated, and specialty paper. Among its key customers are publisher Condé Nast, commercial printer Quebecor, retailer Target, and specialty paper purveyor Avery Dennison.
