Piramed wants to get to the top to fight cancer with kinase inhibitors. The early-stage biotechnology company is developing signal transduction inhibitors (STIs) of the PI3-kinase pathway that could treat various cancers. PI3 is a signaling enzyme that plays a role in cell cycle regulation, proliferation, and apoptosis. Piramed also has PI3 inhibitors in development to treat viral diseases and immune-inflammation. The company, founded in 2003, focuses on the drug target that was discovered by three London cancer institutions -- the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, Cancer Research UK, and the Institute of Cancer Research. Piramed was acquired by the Roche Holding (UK) in 2008.
