Salmedix is fixated on blood. The drug-development company focuses on treatments for hematologic malignancies, or blood cancers. Lead product candidate Treanda is in clinical testing as a therapy for slow-progressing non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). Salmedix obtained the rights to develop and market the drug in North America from a firm in Germany, where the drug (known as Ribomustin) has been aiding patients with NHL for more than 10 years. Salmedix has two other clinical-stage products, SDX-101 and SDX-102, that may treat related types of cancer. Several other candidates that may treat prostate cancer and leukemia also are in preclinical studies. Cephalon bought the company in mid-2005.
