Beltex deals in atypical meat products. The company processes horse, bison, ostrich, and wild boar meat. Beltex exports products to France, Belgium, Italy, and Japan. The company has been facing controversy over its horse slaughtering plant in Fort Worth, Texas. It processes some 27,000 horses a year, which is then sold for human consumption in foreign markets and to pet food manufacturers and zoos. The plant has been closed since early 2007 as a result of a Texas court ruling stating that horse slaughtering in that state is illegal. Appeals went as far as the US Supreme Court, which refused to hear the case. The Texas House of Representatives also failed to pass a reopening bill for the plant.
