To Lifebank, umbilical cord blood is not just a lifeline; it's biological insurance. Formerly Lifebank Cryogenics, the company is a Canadian cord blood bank that collects and cryopreserves umbilical cord blood stem cells for private clients. Because they are able to regenerate bone marrow, hematopoietic stem cells found in umbilical cord blood allow the cord blood to be used in place of bone marrow transplants. Parents can choose to have their newborn's umbilical cord blood stored for potential future use to treat, according to Lifebank, various types of leukemia, anemia, Hodgkins disease, and non-Hodgkins lymphoma. The company has been in operation since 1996 and is approximately one-third owned by managment.
