Community Health Systems (CHS) isn't much of a city dweller. The hospital operator prefers small town America, owning or leasing some 115 hospitals mostly in rural areas or small cities in more than 25 states. Its hospitals (which contain a total of about 17,000 beds) typically act as the sole or primary acute health care provider in their service areas. They offer a variety of medical, surgical, and emergency services and generally have ancillary facilities that include doctors' offices, home health agencies, outpatient surgery centers, and diagnostic imaging facilities. In 2007 CHS acquired Triad Hospitals, adding hospitals in non-urban areas and a few urban markets.
