Embattled HealthSouth is looking for a way to rehabilitate its own fortunes. Hoping for a full recovery in the wake of accounting scandals that rocked the company beginning in 2003, it has shed its outpatient surgery, outpatient rehab, and diagnostic imaging divisions. What remains is its inpatient rehabilitation business, which operates about 90 wholly- or jointly-owned facilities in 27 states, with the largest concentrations in Alabama, Florida, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Texas. The rehab and long-term acute care facilities provide nursing and therapy to patients who have experienced significant disabilities as a result of stroke, spinal cord injury, neuromuscular disease, and other conditions.
