Ligand Pharmaceuticals is receptive to new ideas. The drug development company works with gene transcription technology to address assorted illnesses. The company sold off its commercial operations, including its FDA-approved pain drug Avinza, and has refocused on developing a pipeline of new compounds. Its current R&D efforts include treatments for thrombocytopenia (low platelet count), osteoporosis, menopausal conditions, hepatitis C, cancers, and chronic liver disease, developed internally and in collaboration with larger drug companies. The company acquired development firm Pharmacopeia at the end of 2008 and combined their two pipelines of drug candidates.
