Abaxis makes a praxis of analyzing blood. Its two types of point-of-care blood analyzers (one for humans and one for animals) can each perform more than a dozen types of tests. The analyzers are portable, require little training, provide on-the-spot results, and offer built-in quality control and calibration. The company also sells reagent discs used to perform common blood tests. Abaxis markets the systems under the VetScan name in the veterinary market (where it makes most of its sales) and Piccolo in the human medical market. It is developing a wider range of tests to penetrate the human diagnostic market. Abaxis sells its products to veterinarians, hospitals, managed care organizations, and the military.
