Alpha Natural Resources doesn't mind going underground. The company produces steam and metallurgical coal at about 60 mines and 15 preparation plants, primarily in central and northern Appalachia and the Powder River Basin. Alpha's sales are divided fairly evenly between low-sulfur steam coal, which is used mainly for electricity generation, and metallurgical coal for industrial customers like steel makers. The company produces about 100 million tons of coal annually. It sells about half of its product internationally. Alpha Natural Resources controls about 2.3 billion tons of proved and probable reserves. In 2009 Alpha made a big move when it bought miner Foundation Coal, creating a top three US coal producer.
