Al Gore may have invented the Internet, but BBN Technologies launched the ARPANET, one of the first computer-based communication tools. The company provides services in research and development, computer programming, software development, and data processing and preparation. Clients come primarily from the defense industry and government agencies -- Raytheon, BAE Systems, and Department of Defense -- and also have included Mercedes Benz and Johns Hopkins University. Formerly a unit of Verizon Communications, BBN was purchased in 2004 by company managers affiliated with General Catalyst Partners and Accel Partners. In mid-2009, BBN agreed to be acquired by US military contractor Raytheon Company.
