Metagenics is counting on some big science-y words like "nutraceuticals" and "nutrigenomics" to convince physicians and patients that its nutritional supplements will help treat an assortment of ailments. Among the company's many products are premium vitamin and mineral blends, herbal formulas, sports nutrition supplements, and medical foods -- all held to higher production and absorption standards than most mass-marketed supplements. Metagenics offers more than 400 products overall but sells only to healthcare practitioners who, in turn, prescribe and sell the products to their patients. Metagenics has agreed to be acquired by Alticor in a joint venture arrangement.
