If your heart thumps to the beat of a different drummer, AtriCure wants to clamp down on that activity. The medical device maker has developed a system used in the treatment of atrial fibrillation (AF), a common type of heart arrhythmia. Its primary product, the Isolator bipolar ablation system, allows surgeons to manipulate clamps designed for both open-heart and minimally-invasive procedures. Although the FDA has cleared Isolator for the ablation of cardiac tissue, none of AtriCure's products have received approval specifically for the treatment of AF. Nevertheless, cardiothoracic surgeons have adopted the system to create lesions in the tissue to block electrical impulses that cause quivering in the heart.
