The ALS Therapy Development is a not-for profit biotechnology company that conducts medical research on amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. The degenerative disease progressively attacks neurons in the brain and spinal cord. When these neurons can no longer send impulses to the body's voluntary muscles (due to ALS), the muscles begin to waste away. The organization focuses on drug discovery and development for a cure for ALS, both independently and through collaborations with drug and research entities. Director James Heywood established the company in 1999.
