The firm applies quantitative trading strategies, as well as human research and analysis, to manage hedge funds other investments. It invests in public and private securities, commodities, and companies involved in technology, health care, and financial services. It also makes venture capital investments and acquires assets of distressed companies. D.E. Shaw has some $30 billion in invested and committed capital, and about 10 offices in the US, the UK, Bermuda, India, and Hong Kong.
