From baseball lovers in Boston to scrapbookers in Singapore, Meetup is using the Internet to take America offline. Through its Meetup.com Web site, the company helps people get together in groups that share a common interest. The site offers a network of local topic-specific Meetup Groups though which people self-organize gatherings. "Meetups" take place in thousands of cities around the globe at cafés, restaurants, bookstores, and other local establishments. Revenues come from Meetup organizers, who pay a fee to use the service. In addition, Meetup earns money from advertising and sponsorship.
