JBoss isn't looking to be the boss of everyone -- the company just wants to spread acceptance of its Java-based JBoss application server. The open-source software can be downloaded for free from the company's Web site; the company makes money by helping clients implement JBoss in software development projects, in what JBoss calls the professional open-source business model. JBoss also charges for in-depth certification and training sessions. In June 2006 JBoss was acquired by Red Hat for about $350 million; the JBoss purchase was part of Red Hat's push into the enterprise middleware market..
