Biotech firm Chiron has slimmed down its operations since it's become part of Novartis. Before the merger, Chiron was a large biotech covering several areas, including vaccines and drugs, but now its operations are focused on developing screening diagnostics for blood supplies. The company aims to help prevent the transmission of infections during blood transfusions. This is nothing new for the company; it was the first to identify the hepatitis B and C viruses. Chiron has also developed blood-testing products to detect HIV and other viruses. Its products include PROCLEIX testing assays, automated assay processing instruments, and related software.
