Alcan Baltek is a model of modern manufacturing. The company, a unit of Rio Tinto Alcan through its Alcan Composites subsidiary and part of its Core Composites unit, makes composites and other materials that go into the manufacture of yachts, aircraft, wind turbines, buses, and high-speed trains. Baltek supplies end-grain balsa core material, PVC foam products, and nonwoven polyester mats to manufacturers for use as lamination between fiberglass or metal skins in the production of fiberglass boats, aircraft flooring, and other applications. The hobby industry uses Baltek's balsa wood (produced in Ecuador) for model airplanes. The company formed in 2003 when Alcan Composites bought Baltek.
