Watch out red blood cells -- Alliance Pharmaceutical may be taking over your job. The firm is developing a chemical emulsion called Oxygent for use as a temporary oxygen carrier in surgery patients. Oxygent delivers oxygen to vital organs to prevent tissue damage or organ failure during surgery. The company is also developing Oxygent as a therapy to protect gastrointestinal organs. (Often the body will conserve blood for the heart and brain and deprive the intestines of blood during surgery.) In addition, Oxygent could reduce the need for blood transfusions during surgery. Alliance Pharmaceutical is working with LEO Pharma to get Oxygent approved in the European Union and Canada.
