AMAG Pharmaceuticals' magnetic technology doesn't make things stick, it makes things stick out. The company, formerly called Advanced Magnetics, uses its expertise in iron oxide nanoparticles to create organ-specific diagnostic contrast agents used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) tests. It has two products on the market: Feridex I.V. (for the diagnosis of liver lesions) and GastroMARK (used for delineating the bowel in abdominal imaging). The firm is developing Combidex as a contrast agent for the diagnosis of metastatic lymph nodes. Another product, Feraheme (ferumoxytol), received FDA approval as an iron replacement therapy for anemic patients in 2009.
