Mariner Health Care, which provides long-term nursing home care in California, Florida, and Texas, operates leased skilled nursing facilities. Mariner provides its residents with round-the-clock services that include health care, daily living assistance, rehabilitation, and therapy. Before the firm was acquired by private equity firm National Senior Care, Mariner was crawling out of a bankruptcy (emerging in 2002) and operating some 260 skilled nursing facilities and a dozen long-term care hospitals in about 23 states. The transaction, valued at $1 billion, involved the spinoff of its leased skilled nursing facilities, which are now managed by SavaSeniorCare.
