Through its Hydromet unit and other divisions, Sutron makes equipment that collects and transmits water and weather data. The company also provides related hydrological services. Customers use Sutron products to manage water resources, to obtain early warning of potentially disastrous floods or storms, and to help hydropower plants operate as efficiently as possible. The company's largest customer is the US government. Other customers include state and local governments, engineering companies, and power companies. Sutron markets its products internationally, and customers outside the US account for about 40% of sales. CEO Raul McQuivey owns 19% of the company.
