Would you like to swing on an Enstar? The Enstar Group swings for the fences through investments in insurance and reinsurance firms that are in run-off (insurers that have discontinued underwriting new business but still have liabilities on their books), usually buying a business at a discount to its book value. It has closed more than a dozen purchases since 2006. Enstar also manages run-off business for insurers and reinsurers, collecting consulting fees for its troubles. In 2009 Enstar acquired Copenhagen Re, which was placed in run-off after suffering losses related to the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The group is now buying British Engine Insurance from RSA Insurance for some £28 million (about $45.5 million).
