Call it The Silence of the Genes. Alnylam Pharmaceuticals runs interference with RNA to prevent disease. RNA interference (RNAi) technology developed by the biotech firm can selectively shut off harmful genes. The company is developing its own pipeline, including its treatment for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), a viral infection that is a leading cause of respiratory ailments in children and can be fatal in preemies and children with weak immune systems. Other R&D programs target neurological disorders, cystic fibrosis, and Ebola virus infection. Alnylam has R&D alliances with Roche, Novartis, Biogen Idec, and Medtronic, as well as more than 20 licensing agreements with other biotechnology firms.
