Apart from apartments, Canadian Apartment Properties Real Estate Investment Trust doesn't have much on its mind. Known as CAP REIT, the company invests in multi-family real estate. Its portfolio contains more than 27,600 residential units in apartment buildings and townhouse complexes in urban areas across the country. As part of its diversified strategy, CAP REIT's properties vary from affordable housing to luxury suites. The company also owns two Ontario adult lifestyle communities with more than 1,200 land lease sites. CAP REIT completed its conversion from a closed-end to an open-end investment trust in 2008. The switch removed certain investment restrictions and allowed the REIT to become more flexible.
