State-owned carrier Azerbaijan Airlines, known as AZAL, transports passengers and cargo domestically from the former Soviet republic on the Caspian Sea and to destinations in Central Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. It serves additional destinations through code-sharing agreements with carriers such as British Airways, Delta Air Lines, and Lufthansa. AZAL's fleet includes Airbus and Boeing jets as well as turboprops. The company operated for many years as part of Aeroflot, once the national airline of the Soviet Union, before Azerbaijan gained its independence in 1991. AZAL was founded in 1923.
