Kronos can't take credit for Moby Dick being called the White Whale, but as for the brightly white paper the whale's tale is told on ... that's a different story. Kronos, formerly a wholly owned subsidiary of NL Industries, is among the top manufacturers of titanium dioxide (TiO2 or Tioxide), the most-used whitening pigment for paper, paints, and plastic. With its six manufacturing plants in North America and Europe, Kronos has been able to carve out a place among the top companies in its industry. Kronos has 20% of the European market and about 15% in North America. In 2003 NL spun off Kronos to its own shareholders; NL and its parent company, Valhi, retain majority control of the company.
