Air Nostrum provides regional air services as an exclusive franchise of Iberia. The company flies to about 60 domestic and international destinations on more than 150 routes. Operating a fleet of more than 60 primarily turboprop aircraft, Air Nostrum is also part of the Oneworld alliance led by American Airlines and British Airways. The airliner also provides charter services and carries cargo. Air Nostrum began operations in 1994 with a flight carrying 16 passengers from Valencia to Bilbao. It is 75% owned by Nefinsa S.A. The economic recession has taken a toll on Air Nostrum; in June 2009 the carrier laid off about 500 workers (about 22% of its workforce), cut flight frequencies, and cancelled some routes.
