Capital Gold explores for gold on its mining consessions in the state of Sonora, Mexico. The Chanate deposit, owned by subsidiary Oro de Altar, is located in northern Sonora and consists of 16 mining concessions. It began production in 2007, yielding both silver and gold. AngloGold Ashanti had an option to buy a 51% stake in Chanate but in 2008 chose not to do so. The following year Gammon Gold entered negotiations to buy Capital Gold for about $150 million, but the two companies called it off soon after.
