May Merchandising Company (MMC) is a wholly-owned subsidiary of retail giant The May Department Stores. MMC works with May's multiple department store divisions and its merchandise vendors to communicate fashion trends, develop merchandise, and negotiate the delivery of merchandise to stores. Sister company May Department Stores International, the overseas sourcing organization for May, maintains buying offices in Europe and Asia. MMC was originally formed under the name of The Sostman Mercantile Co. and became May Merchandising in 1969. Parent company May was acquired in mid-2005 by its rival Federated Department Stores in an $11 billion deal.
