It's oil in a day's work for the folks at Catlettsburg Refining. The company, a subsidiary of Marathon Petroleum, operates the 222,000 barrels-per day refinery in Catlettsburg, Kentucky. The refinery, which sits on a 650 plus acre site, produces nearly 2% of the gasoline made in the US. The refinery, which processes both sweet and sour crude oils supplied primarily by pipeline, is a major producer of asphalt, diesel, jet fuel, petrochemicals, propane, and lube oils. Ashland Refining Company acquired the 1,000 barrel per day plant on the edge of the Big Sandy River in 1924. In the 1940s it began a major expansion to assist the World War II effort.
