Taking risks that might scare off other commercial insurance companies, Armed Forces Benefit Association (AFBA) provides group life insurance products for military personnel, government employees, police officers and firefighters, and defense department contractors. The not-for-profit membership association was established in 1947 and has some 300,000 members; its policies contain no war or terrorism restrictions. It sells property/casualty policies through affiliate Armed Forces Insurance. AFBA's for-profit 5Star Financial division, founded in 1989, sells to the general public, offering individual life insurance, supplemental health insurance, and other financial services such as banking and mutual funds.
