Eti Maden, formerly Eti Holding, is on top of the world when it comes to producing borates. The Turkish state-owned company, through Eti Mine Works, is a world-leading miner and processor of boron. (Turkey holds about 60% of the world's boron reserves.) Eti produced 715,000 tons of refined boron products in 2004, a 64% increase over the previous year. Boron is used in products such as soaps, detergents, glass, fertilizers, and nuclear materials. The company also produces perlite, which is used as a construction material, scrubbing sand in refineries, and for growing in greenhouses, among other applications.
