Named after the mythical three-headed dog that guards the gates of hell, Cerberus Capital Management is a driving force among private equity firms. Among its more notable recent moves was the purchase of 80% of Chrysler from Daimler in 2007. Cerberus was also the lead investor of a group that acquired 51% of GMAC, the financing arm of General Motors. Additionally, the firm owns bus manufacturer Blue Bird and car parts maker TA Delaware. Although the company has made headlines with its automotive investments (and that industry's financial woes), Cerberus hasn't been solely concerned with cars and trucks: Automobile interests actually account for less than 10% of the firm's assets under management.
