The Stowers Institute for Medical Research is into mutant life forms. It conducts basic biomedical research on genes and proteins to study the cellular and molecular changes involved in diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and dementia. It carries out its research by causing mutations in mice, chicken embryos, zebra fish, fruit flies, sea urchins, and yeast and by studying the results to see how normal genes function. Cancer survivors Virginia and Jim Stowers founded the organization in 1994 after deciding it was a better legacy to leave their children than a thriving mutual fund. The Stowers Institute planned to open a facility for stem cell research in 2010 but that has been delayed.
