The Stowers Institute for Medical Research is into mutant life forms. The institute conducts basic biomedical research on genes and proteins to study the cellular and molecular changes involved in diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and dementia. It carries out its research by causing mutations in mice, chicken embryos, zebra fish, fruit flies, sea urchins, and yeast and by studying the results to see how normal genes function. The Stowers Institute plans to open a facility for stem cell research by 2010. Cancer survivors Virginia and Jim Stowers founded the organization in 1994 after deciding it was a better legacy to leave their children than a thriving mutual fund.
