Apparently, there's also coal in them there hills. Cloud Peak Energy operates three wholly owned coal mines located in the Powder River Basin of Montana and Wyoming. Its coal is sold mainly to utilities and accounts for 6% of the electricity generated in the US. The company, formerly a subsidiary of Rio Tinto, produces about 100 million tons of coal annually and controls 1 billion tons in proved and probable reserves. It was formed in 1993 as Kennecott Coal, changed its name to Rio Tinto Energy America (RTEA) in 2006, and went public as Cloud Peak Energy two years after that. Rio Tinto retained just less than 50% ownership of Cloud Peak, post-spinoff.
