Class, can you name the capital of New York? The members of New York State Teachers' Retirement System can. Known as NYSTRS for short, the system provides retirement, death, and disability benefits to more than 260,000 public school teachers and administrators, as well as to some 130,000 retirees and beneficiaries. The system, which was established by the state in 1921, serves public school educators in the Empire State, excluding New York City; New York State community colleges, and the State University of New York system. Some charter school employees have the option of participating, as well.
