ALZA helps medicine get under your skin. The company concentrates on drug-delivery systems, primarily transdermal patches; GlaxoSmithKline's #1 smoking-cessation product NicoDerm CQ uses ALZA technology. Other drug delivery systems offered by ALZA include electro-transport systems that use electricity to push the drug through skin, implants designed to regulate drug delivery for up to a full year, depot injections, liposomal technology for intravenous drugs, and timed-release tablets and capsules. The company has been a subsidiary of health care giant Johnson & Johnson since its 2001 acquisition.
