Venerable Union Pacific (UP) keeps on chugging down the track, just as it has since the 19th century. The company's Union Pacific Railroad is one of the US' leading rail freight carriers (along with rival Burlington Northern Santa Fe). Union Pacific Railroad transports coal, chemicals, industrial products, and other freight over a system of more than 32,000 route miles in 23 states in the western two-thirds of the US. The company owns more than 26,000 route miles of its rail network; leases and trackage rights, which allows UP to use other railroads' tracks, account for the rest. UP's biggest customers are container shipping company APL Limited followed by automaker General Motors.
