If you're exploring the latest scientific frontiers, Applied Biosystems (formerly Applera) has some tools for the journey. The firm makes instrument systems, along with related consumables, software, and services, that let researchers analyze nucleic acids and proteins. In addition to their usefulness in drug research, the systems can be used to perform forensic, biosecurity, and food safety testing. Previously, the company had two units -- Applied Biosystems Group and Celera -- each of which traded on the NYSE as a tracking stock of Applera. But in 2008 the company spun off Celera into a separate public company and took on the Applied Biosystems name in preparation for a merger with Invitrogen.
