Although its name recalls the dawn, Aurora helps its customers deal with the sunset of life. Aurora National Life Assurance provides individual and group life insurance, as well as a variety of annuity products, to more than 100,000 customers throughout most of the US. Its predecessor, the collapsed Executive Life Insurance, was taken over by the California Insurance Commission in 1991 in the nation's largest-ever regulatory seizure. The agency sold Executive Life's assets to French billionaire François Pinault in 1994 in a series of controversial transactions that have been scrutinized in federal court (although charges against Pinault have been cleared).
