After that final push, a laboring new mother can rest, but CorCell is ready to get busy. The company collects and stores umbilical cord blood, at the parents' request and expense, for potential use of the stem cells. Such stem cells are considered viable for current and future treatments for a variety of diseases and illnesses. The company, established in 1996, collects umbilical cord blood stem cells from hospitals in all 50 states and abroad. CorCell has grown through acquisitions of smaller regional cord blood banks, and stores materials for some 20,000 customers. Its parent company is Cord Blood America, Inc.
