CSX Transportation, the primary subsidiary of CSX, provides rail freight transportation over a network of about 21,000 route miles of track in 23 states in the eastern half of the US, the District of Columbia, and two Canadian provinces. Freight carried by the railroad includes merchandise (agricultural products, chemicals, food and consumer products, forest products, metals, and phosphates and fertilizer), coal, motor vehicles and related products, and intermodal containers. Merchandise accounts for the largest share of CSX Transportation's revenue. Sister company CSX Intermodal arranges transportation of containerized freight by road and rail.
