The many meridians that Transmeridian Exploration has crossed finds it exploring for oil and gas in the Caspian Sea region. Its core property, the South Alibek Field, is located in Kazakhstan. In 2007 Transmeridian Exploration reported estimated proved reserves of 58.6 million barrels of oil equivalent. The company conducts its operations in Kazakhstan through subsidiary Caspi Neft TME. Although Transmeridian Exploration had dabbled with developing natural gas properties in South Texas and the Gulf Coast region, it has switched its focus to the Caspian Sea solely. In 2009, laden with debt, the company declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
